Government willing to have discussion with protesting wrestlers, says Sports Minister Anurag Thakur

Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports of India, Anurag Thakur has tweeted that the central government is willing to have a ‘discussion’ with protesting wrestlers.

“The government is willing to have a discussion with the wrestlers on their issues. I have once again invited the wrestlers for the same,” Thakur wrote via his social media past midnight on Wednesday.

The statement comes four days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah met a delegation of protesting wrestlers at his official residence in the capital.

The Indian Express had reported earlier that the meeting, which is learnt to have lasted for over two hours and ended after midnight, was attended by Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik along with several coaches. “We had a meeting with the Home Minister. I can’t comment further,” Bajrang had told this paper.

The 2021 Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist is among some of the country’s top wrestlers, who’ve been protesting in the national capital over more than a month, demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, alleging him of sexual harassment and misconduct.

The Delhi Police registered two FIRs against Singh on April 28 that, as reported by this publication on Friday, have at least two instances of demanding “sexual favours” in lieu of professional assistance; close to 15 incidents of sexual harassment that include 10 episodes of inappropriate touching, molestation that includes running hands over breasts, touching the navel; several instances of intimidation including stalking.

The Indian Express also reported that one Olympian, a Commonwealth gold medallist, an international referee and a state-level coach are learnt to have corroborated the allegations of at least three female wrestlers, and are among the 125 potential witnesses across four states whose statements have been recorded by Delhi Police.

The status of the investigation into these allegations against Singh, as learnt, was the key issue raised by the wrestlers at their meeting with Shah. The wrestlers underlined their demand for a strong chargesheet to be filed quickly. The Home Minister is learnt to have said that the due process needs to be followed.
